Nigeria Malaria Challenges

Malaria is a tropical acute and chronic life-threatening parasitic protozoan disease characterized by fever. It is transmitted from one person to another through the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitos which is its known vector; and it transmits a protozoon of the Plasmodium genus. The most common specie in Sub-Sharan Africa is P. falciparum, causing over 300, 000 deaths per annum in Nigeria alone.

Troubling Facts

Four African countries account for half of all malaria deaths worldwide:

-Nigeria 31.3%

-Democratic Republic of Congo 12.6%

-United Republic of Tanzania 4.1%

-Niger Republic 3.9%

Nigeria records over 100 Million cases, 30% of Childhood death, 25% of under One-year death, and 11% of Maternal death rates annually.

Mosquitoes thrive in a dirty environment; stagnant water, improperly disposed waste, improper drainage systems, leaving overgrown grasses in our surroundings, citrus plants or banana plants, etc.

Nigeria Environmental Challenges

POOR DRAINAGE AND SEWER SYSTEM

Nigeria’s gutters and Sewer System have been constructed in such a way that liquid waste has no central collection point it drains into, rather the liquid has become a consistent breeding source for mosquitoes.

As been established, the mosquito developmental process is on water, this means that if Government can mobilize Environmental Health Professionals with the task of genuinely coming up with a blueprint to alter certain environmental factors to manage water and truncate the metamorphosis of mosquitoes, Nigeria would be able to have an official document that guides malaria elimination interventions and a possible projected date to eliminate Malaria in Nigeria.

OPEN DUMPING

Poor solid waste management, where in the 21st century Nigeria still practice open dumping has to be discouraged. Most of the waste articles serve as receptor of water where mosquito can lay eggs and develop into adult. Government need to consider building Sanitary landfill in every State of Nigeria for proper management of solid waste and jettison open dumping practice.

Government should also begin implementation of a Pay- to -Dispose Rubbish Policy.

Authorities should ensure to design a National Modern Drainage and Sewer Construction Plan and commence its immediate implementation to outface the current mosquito breeding system.

COMMUNITY MALARIA CONTROL INTERVENTIONS

As a compliment to our campaign to galvanize policy makers in Nigeria towards promulgating environmental enabling policies that will aid water management, waste management, drainage and dam construction etc, our team consistently carry out Indoor residual spraying (IRS) in homes, with a keen interest in homes of pregnant and nursing women who suffer the highest malaria mortality rate in Nigeria. The indoor residual spraying of the internal walls of homes protect residents living in the house from mosquito bite between 3 – 6 months.

COMMUNITY HEALTH EDUCATION

Our team also do community education and sensitization on sanitation to discouraging harbourage, water and food for pest to thrive.

COMMUNITY INTERACTION AND INVOLVEMENT

We engage the local government, traditional and religious leadership of every community prior and during our community intervention.

During every community intervention, we recruit our workforce among community youths and engage them in indept training on indoor residual spraying and drainage larvisiding. This also provide seasonal employment for those engaged.

Malaria is majorly a poor Environmental thriving problem. When you ask a man from a Curative background to solve a problem that should have been resolved through Prevention, he will simply make PREVENTION appear difficult.
